M Squared, A Story of Two Loves

M Squared is born from two great loves: a love for each other, and a love for making wine together.

Melissa Buttery and Mike Brown first met in 1994, both 25 years old and already immersed in the world of wine. Melissa had just begun working alongside her father in the family vineyard, while Mike was managing Manning Park Cellar Door and working vintages in the cellar. Their connection was instant, and before long, it blossomed into a marriage, a family of three children, and a lifelong partnership in both life and wine.

Melissa studied Viticulture at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, balancing study with work in her family’s vineyard management business. Mike, with a Diploma in Wine Marketing from Roseworthy, went on to complete a postgraduate diploma in Oenology at Waite, while gaining experience at d’Arenberg Wines and Kangarilla Road Winery.

In 1998, their shared dream took shape with the creation of Gemtree Wines, beginning with 500 dozen Shiraz. Under their care, Gemtree grew into a respected and significant wine brand. Central to its philosophy was a bold decision made in 1997 to convert the family vineyards to organic and biodynamic practices, a choice driven by Melissa’s passion for regenerative farming and her belief in nurturing soil health, vineyard vitality, and environmental sustainability.

After 25 years, in 2023, Melissa and Mike sold Gemtree Wines but retained the family vineyards they had purchased from Melissa’s parents in 2020. It wasn’t long before they realised how much they missed the joy of making wine side by side. And so, in 2025, M Squared was born.

Unlike Gemtree, M Squared will remain a boutique wine brand, dedicated to small-batch, premium wines that reflect both the land and the love behind them. The first release is an Albariño, with a Fiano and a Grenache to follow in 2026.

At its heart, M Squared is a story of family, passion, and connection. We hope you love our wines as much as we love growing and making them together.
